Rajiv Satyal is an accomplished comedian who has a prolific content marketing strategy. He creates a lot of content of many different sorts- blogs, podcasts, and videos. His site just wasn’t moving as fast as he was. So a designer recruited me to create a custom theme which to speed up the publishing of all his different kinds of content. Here are some of the things I did for the site.
Simplified Publishing for Diverse Content
The custom theme simplified the publishing work flow by including support for a new WordPress feature called Post Formats. Before post formats, publishing posts with different presentations for different types of content was a laborious multi-step process. It wasn’t easy on the user since it often required them to remember details about what categories to pick or what fields to fill.
By including support for the new feature I was able to turn the publishing workflow into a one step process that results in a beautiful published post each time.
Better Presentation and UX for Videos
Unlike other blogs which showcase videos, this page also stops playing other videos before starting a new one. This UX is much more logical and similar to YouTube’s.
Easy Theme Management and Customization
WordPress makes it easy to edit and publish posts, but site-wide elements like colors, or footer text don’t have that support. So to enable Rajiv to edit these items any time he wanted with no developer help I coded in a theme customizer in the theme. It handles footer text, social media icons and many more elements.
